A critical lens essay on the novels The Lord of the Flies by William Golding and To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee

A critical lens essay on the novels The Lord of the Flies by William Golding and To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee "...in all of us, even in good men, there is lawless wild-beat nature..."Plato, The Republic, Book IXThere is a second side to mankind, which is the uncivilized side. Even in the best of mankind, the wild beast can come out resulting in brutal wounding, drugs, alcohol and even killing. In the novel, The Lord of the Flies, the beast awakens within Jack and Ralph. However, in To Kill A Mockingbird, Bob Ewell and Atticus do not have a good and bad side.Atticus, a good character and Bob Ewell, a bad character do not have a civilized side. Bob has the uncivilized nature and Atticus has the civilized nature. An example of this is when Atticuses gets spat in the face by Bob Ewell, Atticus then responds by saying "'I wish Bob Ewell wouldn't chew tobacco,'" pg. 217. This quote shows how good Atticus is, when Bob spat on him.Lord of the FliesAt the end of the novel Atticus does not let out his anger, when the court case that he worked on did not turn out properly. He held his anger down, which a normal person would be really mad, because the accused was black which made him guilty even though he was not guilty. An example of Bob Ewell not following the critical lens is when he spat in Atticus's face after winning the trial. "Mr. Bob Ewell stopped Atticus on the post office corner, spat in his face, and told him he'd get him if it took the rest of his life." This shows the evil in Bob by stopping Atticus and threatening him that he is going to "get him" when he already "got him" in the court trial. Bob Ewell should be jumping for joy that he won the trial but he...

Guy couples should be allowed to adopt children Essay

Guy couples should be allowed to adopt children - Essay Example It is high time the remaining States emulate them, take cognizance of the overwhelming arguments in favor of the practice, stop their unfair restriction and allow gay and lesbian couples to adopt children. Firstly, there are an inordinately large number of children in the country who are on the adoption waiting list. Rob Woronoff, spokesperson of Child Welfare League of America {CWLA} has gone on record to state that the child welfare system in the U.S. is mired in deep crisis because there are not enough families coming forward to adopt children. North American Council on Adoptable Children reports that nearly 520,000 children are in foster homes in the U.S. Out of these, although 120,000 are ready for adoption, only 50,000 ultimately reach permanent homes every year (Stone http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2006-02-20-gay-adoption-foster_x.htm). A large percentage of the children left behind are the ‘odd’ ones: older children, or children with special needs. The children left behind, especially the ‘odd’ ones, have been accepted in foster care by same sex couples, who are now desirous of adopting the children (Belge http://lesbianlife.about.com/cs/families /a/adoption.htm). Renowned actress Rosie O’Donnell {a lesbian living with her same sex partner Kelli O’Donnell and their 4 adopted children} unerringly points to the reason for same sex couples’ partiality towards adopting ‘odd’ children: â€Å"As a gay person as a child, you kind of know what it’s like to be the odd one out† (Stone http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2006-02-20-gay-adoption-foster_x.htm). By not allowing adoption, the authorities are not permitting the already existing loving relationship between children and same sex couples to blossom into full-fledged fruition acceptable by society. This attitude is especially unfair to the children as they are being refused the opportunity to live in safe, sound and permanent households (Belge

Grounds Maintenance Building Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Grounds Maintenance Building - Essay Example The building integrated photovoltaic is designed for easy integration into the building even after it is built (BIPV). Thus the building integrated photovoltaic could easily be used as the roof for the building besides acting as a mini power source for the same building unit. This would be adequate to meet its essential lighting and also the outside illumination needs. The modules are designed such that they are transparent and part of the natural light could also be easily transferred into the building. Structurally they are crystalline and micro perforated amorphous transparent modules (BIPV). Their ability to be fixed to both tile roof and flat roof could give them an ample scope for demonstration in the college campus. Also, using photovoltaic as the venation blinds is another area that could be explored in our settings. Though the systems demand high level of expertise and planning an excellent demonstration of this technology would help to realize how the past impact caused by the structural elements could be mitigated by saving the environment into future. And thus Ground Maintenance Building would stand as the icon of environmental sustainability in the college campus.

Extremely Disturbing Accident Essay Example for Free

Extremely Disturbing Accident Essay There was an extremely disturbing accident a couple of years ago. I will never be able to forget that scene which made Daniel lost his words and made him stay in the darkness for such a long time. Daniel was a wonderful man who cared about his family more than anything else. He had a lovely wife who was called Mary and between them, he had the most adorable daughter. I have never seen such a caring and loving family who knows to take care about their neighbors as well. They were especially kind to me who was living next door, old and alone. They knew I had no relatives so they often invited me at dinner and on the special occasions such as Christmas and Birthdays. They regarded me as a member of the family. We used to sing every night and, oh, I remember, the family was very fond of reciting poems. Therefore, we had this party in which all had to recite favorite poems very often. Daniel used to write the poems by himself and the poems were always about love in the family and each time, we were touched and impressed by high qualities of them. However, the happiness did not last long. On Daniels 40th Birthday, Mary and her daughter, Kate, and I planed to surprise him by taking a birthday cake and a lot of nice food to share with his friends to where Daniel was working. In spite of the fact that Daniel was very angry when we once visited him long time ago, he said the place is too dangerous, we were taking food to where Daniel was working. Having thought back about what he said, he was right; He did a lot of physical works for building up the structures and the place where he worked was very dangerous indeed. Kate was singing, excited with joys, she couldnt wait to see her dads smile at her little- hand made birthday card. She was running down the hill and at the same time, I just realized that she is not safe any longer at that distance. Mary and I were running after her, shouting to stop, but it was too late. By accident, one of the workers dropped a huge-hard wooden material from high floor of the building, and Mary was hit by it so hard that even before the ambulance came to help her, she was already gone to the other world. Daniel thought her death was his fault and he quit the job. He acted like an insane person and people started to avoid him, even his wife gave up trying to turn him back to normal. At last, they got divorced in few months. I didnt see Daniel for a few months around his house, and then I found him in his garden. I asked him whether he feels better and he always nodded at my questions. I noticed he became the person I used to know, the person before faced his daughters death, but I knew something was wrong. He was quiet, too quiet. His eyes were always full of sorrow and made my heart broke. They reminded me of Mary who was gone long ago. I did my best to make him to speak again, not out of pity, but I felt I am the one relative left to take care of him. He hardly got out from his room; it was so hard to make him to get along with people, to get socialized again. I thought it would be impossible to make him speak again unless Mary comes back to him. One day, I have succeeded to take him to the poetry club where he used to love to go and listen to the poems. I thought this rally was the last chance I have and played to God desperately. That, that was a miracle; he was listening the poems quietly and suddenly, he stood up. After a while he started to mumble something and soon he made a perfect sound. I was frozen, alert. The people around him listened to him. He found the music of speech which was concealed in this heart deeply for a long time. When he is done, before the applause, we observed the flowers silence. A thrush sings and the daffodils are flame

Carpets: Mass Production vs Handmade Essay -- carpet manufacturing tec

Introduction:- Civilization has brought tremendous changes in the life of human beings. All things are changing day by day through the efforts of scientific researches. Among these textiles are good example.. a dictionary definition of the noun 'textile' is a woven fabric and d defination of the verb 'to wave' is 'to make by crossing threads, strands, strips etc, above and below one another, as in a loom to form cloth'.(sheila landi1998,-10-11). Textile are remarkable and exist in many forms. they can be made from a wide range of fibers including: cotton , flax, wool, silk, acrylic and polyester. the process involved in making textiles from these fibers are diverse e.g: spinning , weaving, braiding , knotting , embroidery , dying and printing(foekje boersma 2007). The Textile industry is one of the oldest, largest and most global industries in the world. It is the typical ‘starter’ industry for countries engaged in export-orientated industrialisation (Gereffi 2002) and is labour-intensive. Brenton et al. (2007) suggest a number of reasons why the Textile sector has played such an important role in economic development. The sector absorbs large numbers of unskilled labour, typically drawing them from rural agricultural households to rural locations. Despite relatively low start-up investment costs, expansion of the sector provides a base upon which to build capital for more technologically demanding activities in other sectors. Throughout ancient times, textile manufacture was practiced on all levels of society and was one of the most labour-intensive of all occupations. As such, it was an industry of great cultural and social importance and should be factored into any balanced assessment of the ancient economy. Electrical Substation

1. INTRODUCTION Electrical substation for distribution system is the main supply to convert the high voltage (HV) to low voltage (LV) and the place where load are distributed to the consumers. In Malaysia, Tenaga Nasional Berhad Distribution (TNBD) used the 33/0. 433kV, 22/0. 433kV, 11/0. 433kV and 6. 6/0. 433kV voltage system for the electrical system to supply for domestic consumer and industrial consumer such as factory which will supplied directly from Transmission Main Intakes (PMU), Main Distribution Sub –station (PPU) or Main Switch Sub – station (SSU).Electrical substation is the place where all electrical equipments such as high voltage switching, three phase transformer, high voltage cables, low voltage cables, low voltage feeder pillar, battery charging and etc which are used for electrical supplying in power system and to make sure the safety of the system by the protection scheme. Basically, electrical system have one or several in coming and out going circ uit which are controlled by high voltage switching and meet in one or more in the same of busbar system.Generally, electrical substation is a point in distribution system where: * A place where several electrical equipments are installed and used for electrical energy in power system. * A place where the safety of the system is provides by automatically protection scheme. * A place where one or several incoming and outgoing circuit are met at one or more busbar system and controlled by high voltage switching equipment which is used for switching. * A place where voltage value is changed and controlled. A place where load are distributed, controlled and protected FUNCTIONS OF A SUBSTATION * Supply of required electrical power. * Maximum possible coverage of the supply network. * Maximum security of supply. * Shortest possible fault-duration. * Optimum efficiency of plants and the network. 2. OPERATION OF 11 kV MODULAR POWER PLAN LAB Electric power is normally generated at 11-25kV in a power station. To transmit over long distances, it is then stepped-up to 400kV, 220kV or 132kV as necessary. Power is carried through a transmission network of high voltage lines.Usually, these lines run into hundreds of kilometres and deliver the power into a common power pool called the grid. The grid is connected to load centres (cities) through a sub-transmission network of normally 33kV (or sometimes 66kV) lines. These lines terminate into a 33kV (or 66kV) substation, where the voltage is stepped-down to 11kV for power distribution to load points through a distribution network of lines at 11kV and lower. The stepped-down voltage of 11kV is channelled to the RMU(Ring Main Unit) and outgoing feeder of the substation. This is to ensure the continous supply of electricity even during maintenance. The RMU unit is speacially designed that during maintence the affected users will receive supply from a different substation which is interconnected. This is because maintenance have to b e carried out in an ON condition. 3. BLOCK DIAGRAM OF 11kV MODULAR POWER PLAN 4. FUNCTIONS AND MAINTAINENCE OF ALL EQUIPMENTS 5. 1 Switch gear/ circuit breaker In an  electric power system,  switchgear  is the combination of electrical disconnect switches,  fuses  or  circuit breakers  used to control, protect and isolate electrical equipment.Switchgear is used both to de-energize equipment to allow work to be done and to clear  faults  downstream. This type of equipment is important because it is directly linked to the reliability of the  electricity supply. Typically, the switchgear in  substations  is located on both the high voltage and the low voltage side of large power  transformers. The switchgear on the low voltage side of the transformers may be located in a building, with medium-voltage circuit breakers for distribution circuits, along with metering, control, and protection equipment. For industrial applications, a  transformer  and switchgear line-up may be combined in one housing, called a unitized  substation  or USS. Types of circuit breakers: I. Oil Oil circuit breakers rely upon vaporization of some of the oil to blast a jet of oil through the arc. II. Gas Gas (SF6) circuit breakers sometimes stretch the arc using a magnetic field, and then rely upon the dielectric strength of the SF6  to quench the stretched arc. III. Vacuum Vacuum circuit breakers have minimal arcing (as there is nothing to ionize other than the contact material), so the arc quenches when it is stretched to a very small amount (

Difference Between Standard Telephone Lines n Digital Lines essays

Difference Between Standard Telephone Lines n Digital Lines essays This essay will opinionate the difference between standard telephone lines and digital telephone lines. My favor in this subject would be digital, offering faster send/receive rates. Basically, computers operate with digital signals. Which is then sent through a modem to convert the data into an analog signal, which is passed through POTS or plain old telephone system. Finally, there is another modem at the receiving end, converting the analog data back into its digital form to be processed by the computer at the receiving end. The telephone was originally designed to carry voice messages, also called analog signals. The lines are now being occupied to send digital data. Reason being, you can send and receive data with anyone in the world with a computer and telephone service, without a network. But the downfall, speed, the limit for transmission speeds over analog lines is only around .005 as fast as a 10Base-T Ethernet network. The effect it had on telephone companies across the world was, to offer digital lines specifically designed for data communications. Most people still have analog telephone lines in their homes and businesses. Digital telephone lines can offer about 200 times as fast a transfer rate than a 56 Kbps (kilobytes per a second) modem, equaling to be 10 Mbps (Megabytes per a second). The telephone companies recognized the problem several years ago and started the long process of converting the analog system into a digital scheme. Bulky data channels that are used to connect major geographical regions are already digital. The lines that run below or above the surface of most streets in a city or town are still analog. Therefore making these systems extremely confusing, especially while transmitting data trough a modem. After this transition finishes taking place it will affect most users in these three simple ways: Requiring a different phone, a digital one that can translate your voice into bits rather than a...

How to Purchase and Prepare Trees for Planting

How to Purchase and Prepare Trees for Planting Nurseries provide nearly 1.5 billion trees for planting in the United States each year. This represents over six trees annually propagated for every U.S. citizen. The United States Forest Service reports that nearly 3 million acres are forested with those billion and a half baby seedlings. For those that are interested, here are answers to questions on Tree Planting Statistics for the United States. I now want to break down planting trees in manageable bits for you. I will provide answers to the following questions with links for further information: Â   Why and Where Should You Plant Trees? When Do You Plant a Tree? How Do You Plant a Tree?Where Do You Get Trees to Plant? Why Plant a Tree? Planting a tree can have tremendous influences on communities. Tree planting improves our environment. Planting a tree can add to our incomes and decrease energy costs. To plant a tree can enhance our quality of life and improve our health. I cant think of many things that touch us so completely as does planting a tree. My point is, we need trees to be planted! Art Plotnik, in his book The Urban Tree Book, indicates eight reasons to plant trees . Trees reduce sound, produce oxygen, store carbon, clean the air, gives shade and cools, reduces wind and erosion and increases property values. This book, a big seller, attests to the fact that people also enjoy studying and identifying trees. Identifying trees is a hobby that millions of Americans practice. There are plenty to ID with over 700 tree species growing in North America alone. My most popular destination sites at About Forestry deal with identifying and naming trees. People cant seem to learn enough. First, take this simple quiz and find out how much you really know about tree planting! Where Should You Plant a Tree? Use common sense when planting a tree. If the planted tree is expected to grow tall or expand widely, give it the room it needs for future growth. Understanding species moisture, light and soil needs is extremely important. Plant according to the nursery instructions. A USDA tree and plant hardiness zone map is one good guide in helping you determine a tree’s ability to withstand an average minimum temperature. I refer to plant hardiness zones a lot when reviewing individual trees: See: USDA Tree Hardiness Zone Maps by Region More on Where You Should Plant a Tree Wildland tree planting (the most practical method of tree planting for reforestation) is done during dormant winter months, most often after December 15th but before March 31st. You may need to do it a little earlier or a little later in warmer or colder climates. Your nursery can help you decide. Always observe the ten commandments after seedlings are delivered. Although you do not plant most wildland trees during the summer you should make sure you have ordered your trees for the season by early summer. Many people who wait until fall to find available trees just might not find any seedlings. Always order your seedlings as early as you can. Planting urban trees is a little different. Horticultural planting has evolved into an all year operation because of the extra protection of a root ball with each tree. Any season is OK for planting balled or burlaped trees. More on When You Should Plant a Tree For simplicity, I want to divide planting into two categories - horticultural and wildland planting . Horticultural tree planting is geared toward urban situations where landscaping is of primary concern. Generally speaking, because these trees contain an intact root ball, they can be planted in any season. Where these higher valued saplings and trees are planted to enhance property, more effort should be spent on each individual tree. Kim Powell, Extension Horticultural Specialist, explores the types of trees available for transplanting and gives tips on purchasing, planting, and maintaining tree transplants . Here is a how to on planting balled in burlap saplings: Planting Balled Saplings Also, you would be well advised to take my Tree Wellness Quiz before planting the saplings. Dont worry about your score. The object here is to find out what you know and to give you some help with the things you dont know. Wildland planting, the preferred method for reforestation, is done over a much broader area. Even though this type of planting is cheaper on a per tree basis, it can be very expensive in total and should be done correctly. A plan can make your planting effort more effective. Reforestation using bare-root seedlings is done by government, industry, and private individuals. The plantings are most often made using coniferous species. Hardwood wildland planting is also a viable practice, but hardwood regeneration techniques also include sprouting and dormant seeds. Many times these non-planting techniques are the preferred methods of regeneration. Also, federal and state cost-share programs have historically supported funding pine, spruce, and fir planting over hardwood planting. Here is a how to on planting bare-root seedlings: Planting Bare-root Seedlings Coniferous planting techniques are similar for most species. I have included planting guides for the western United States created by Colorado State Forest Service and for the southern United Sates created by South Carolina Forestry Commission . These sources give you a good overview on how to deliver, handle, store, and transplant seedlings. You must use proper care with a big emphasis on the correct temperature range and moisture level. Again, always observe the ten commandments. More on How You Should Plant a Tree By now you have either decided to plant some trees, or have chucked the whole idea. If you are not too discouraged, let me help you get in touch with a nursery that can provide you with trees and suggest companies that can supply you with equipment necessary to the task of tree planting. First off, you can purchase trees over the Internet. I have a short list of reliable companies where you can buy a seedling or sapling online. Check out my seedling supplier source page An excellent forest nursery directory providing most tree species and covering the entire United States is maintained by the U.S. Forest Service. Also, you can find tree nurseries at most state forestry departments. You also may need some special planting tools. There are on-line specialty supply companies that provide equipment for natural resource managers. These forestry supply companies have a variety of planting equipment as well as other forestry equipment. So, the Tree is in the Ground... Things are pretty much out of your hands after the trees are planted. You have to leave things to Mother Nature. My experience has been that even when considering a freeze, insects, or fire, moisture is the most critical element in seedling survival for the first year or two. Trees and Drought is a short feature explaining the effect of the lack of moisture on trees, especially seedlings and saplings. Actually, most well-established trees will tolerate drought quite well, although much depends on the species and whether they are growing on an appropriate site.

Confucianism, Daoism, and Leagalism in China Essay

Confucianism, Daoism, and Leagalism in China - Essay Example Daoism is another ancient religion of China, which promotes the concepts of peace and harmony. If we talk about Legalism, we can say that it is a philosophy, which promotes the value of law in a society. Moral values are the cornerstone of the philosophy of Confucianism. The believers of Confucianism give great importance to the moral values and never do anything, which may go against their moral values. â€Å"Confucianism is mainly concerned with moral values, which form the cornerstone of its philosophy† (Islam Contemporary Perspective). Confucianism gives rise to such a society where everyone gives preference to moral and ethics, and tries to promote a real peaceful society where there is harmony and tranquility between the individuals. Believers of Confucianism take care of their friends and never produce harm to any person. They love each other and take care of each other’s rights. Unlike Legalists, believers of Confucianism view history and poetry as educational r esources, which they study to get awareness of their history, society, and traditions. Another difference between Confucianism and Legalism is related to the preference of family. For Legalists, preference to family comes second to laws whereas in Confucianism, family is the top priority for a person and he/she takes every step for the protection of his/her family. Some of the strongest points of the religion of Confucianism include belief in God, belief in the angels, respect for moral values, elimination of insincerity, appreciation for beneficial arts, and feelings of sympathy for the foreigners. Believers of Confucianism give extreme importance to the formation of strong governments. It is a fact that the role of a strong government is very important for the development of an orderly society. Therefore, the believers of Confucianism believe that a ruler should exhibit good morals and ethics in order to develop and maintain an orderly society. If we talk about Daoism, we can say that believers of Daoism believe in the importance of peace, harmony, kindness towards others, and sincerity. There is no concept of selfishness in the religion of Daoism. Believers of Daoism live a very peaceful life and do not struggle for such things, which can make their lives difficult. â€Å"Daoism believes that life is generally happy but that it should be lived with balance and virtue† (Chiu). Daoism promotes easy and peaceful life where there are no tensions between people. â€Å"Ritual is an important part of religious Taoism, and the rites are specific to particular deities and departed ancestors† (Harmon). De, Immortality, and The Dao are the main components of Daoism. De refers to the concepts of morality and integrity whereas Immortality refers to the concept of helping others through mediation. The believers of Daoism create such society where every individual tries to achieve immortality by helping others in every field of life. The Way is considered th e ultimate truth in Daoism. It refers to the way people live their lives. â€Å"Daoists do not believe in extremes, instead focusing on the interdependence of things† (Chiu). If we talk about Legalism, we can say that government comes before anything else in a pure Legalist society. People abide by the laws and do not do anything, which goes beyond the limits of law. People serve the government their level best because they know the importance of a well-structured and
